Employer tips on CVs
Make sure your CV gives the information an employer needs in order to make a decision about your application. We asked recruitment experts from Baillie Gifford, Moore Stephens, Legal & General, Chaucer, Nationwide, HSBC, Sesame, Santander and Citigroup, what they thought were the top three mistakes that a candidate can make on a CV. Here is what they said:
Spell it right!
There is no doubt; the worst mistake you can make is bad spelling. The recruitment experts were unanimous in this and in some cases more than three spelling mistakes means your CV or application form will rejected. Ask your friend, teacher or careers adviser to proof read it for you.
The whole truth and nothing but the truth!
Our experts read hundreds of CVs a year. They are very clear: be honest about your achievements, experience and grades. This information will be verified during an interview.
Keep it simple!
Stick to the (real) facts and make sure your cover letter or personal statement is tailored to the role you are applying for. Only use information that is relevant and highlights your potential contribution to the role and company to which you are applying.
