More about work experience
Voluntary or paid, undertaking a work placement is a great way to better understand a particular role, organisation and sector. Whether you are at school or college or are looking for a career change, it is a great way to build a portfolio of experience.
Work experience is an effective way to support your career research and to:
- Demonstrate your skills to an employer
- Develop confidence in a professional environment
- ‘Try out’ a sector and employer
- Build professional contacts
Whilst work placements were traditionally one or two weeks long and were undertaken as part of a school or college course, employers now offer a range of ways for individuals to gain access to their organisations. Spending one day with an employer, either individually or as part of a large group will give you a clear insight into the organisation and its culture and values. You’ll get to speak to people who are working there, see ‘behind the scenes’ and most importantly begin to build your network of contacts. Remember that employers will be looking out for individuals who demonstrate enthusiasm, great communication skills and display a genuine interest. Put yourself in a good position by asking questions, engaging the people you meet in conversation and enquiring about follow up opportunities.
On Directions you’ll find employers who are offering a range of opportunities for people to gain experience with them – from one day group insight days through to two week placements.
